One of my most recent Graphic Design projects was to design the look & feel and first volume for the online magazine Roundabouts Now. Working very closely with the editor, we created a very modern and visually appealing design. In addition, the online publication has many links to very important and interesting sources of information. That is why reading Roundabouts Now is an interactive experience that will be appreciated by the readers.

Creating a logo: landscaping company

The Green Man Group needed to change their home-made logo and get a new one that reflects better the company's reliability and professionalism. In this post you can see some of the proposals I made for the clients.

They chose the logo with the letter "G" made with a leaf, but they also loved the character I created for other proposal, so they asked me to use it in the different applications that I designed after the logo: business cards, signs, flyers and doorknockers.

The Green Man Group necesitaba cambiar el logo bastante casero que habían estado utilizando por uno que reflejara mejor la responsabilidad y profesionalismo de la joven empresa. En esta entrada pueden apreciar parte de los bocetos que desarrollé para proponérselo a los clientes.

Aunque el logo escogido es el que presenta la hoja como haciendo de letra "G" a los clientes les encantó el personaje que diseñé para otra de las propuestas, así que me pidieron que lo utilizara para las distintas aplicaciones que siguieron a la creación del logo: tarjetas, volantes y afiches.

In the picturesque Kettle Valley, in the Okanagan region, it's possible to travel in time, to the early 1900's, and enjoy a very special trip on board a 100 years old train through the surviving 10 kilometers of the old railways of this zone of western Canada.

Diario de un viaje en tren al Antiguo Oeste

En la región del Okanagan se encuentra la pintoresca zona de Kettle Valley, donde se tiene la oportunidad de viajar en el tiempo un siglo atrás y experimentar un viaje muy especial en un centenario tren y a lo largo de los 10 kilómetros que sobreviven de las antiguas vías férreas de este lado del oeste canadiense. Espero que disfruten esta pequeña muestra de lo que fue ese interesante paseo.

A logo for the children

This opportunity I would like to tell you about the creative process to design the "Including all Children and Families Expanding Partnerships" logo. The project has a very long name. That´s why I decided to focus on the symbol. I wanted to represent children, happy children because their families love them and do their best for their kids.

After the first sketches and selecting what I considered the best options I proceeded to prepare the logo proposals in the computer. In several options I played with geometrical elements, representing a family, with two adults and a child. The child is in the center and the adults take care of him or her. The elements distribution transmit the idea of a pyramid, a very stable structure. In addition, every one of the three figures is made by a letter "i" for INCLUSION. For one of the versions I started considering the shape of a heart.

There is also a very organic image. Loose lines and shapes. This symbol represents two adults (parents) and two children (whites circles are the heads) embracing their parents (the white strip represents their arms). The kids are included into the adults, representing how kids lives are linked to their parents´protection. In that design I also included very subtly the BC element: the wavy strips in the bottom and the shapes of the parents´bodies represent also the sea, rivers and mountains of the Province.

Finally, here is the image that almost unanimously was the team's favorite. It is a very organic image. A light and clean design. It represents a happy child, playing. It can be interpreted as skipping a rope or taking one of his or her parents by the hands. The rope is, at the same time a heart, symbol of love and tenderness.

Un logo para los niños

En esta oportunidad quería comentar el proceso creativo que seguí para desarrollar el logo de "Including all Children and Families Expanding Partnerships". Al ser un nombre tan largo decidí que el elemento principal debía ser el símbolo, y para el mismo quería representar una infancia feliz, en la que los niños se sienten apoyados y amados por sus padres.

Después de muchos bocetos procedí a seleccionar los que, para mí, funcionarían mejor y los comencé a hacer en la computadora. En varias versiones jugué con las imágenes de los dos padres y un hijo o hija, que se entrelazaban dando la idea de un abrazo familiar, y distribuidos en forma de pirámide, figura geométrica que representa estabilidad. Además, cada figura era también una letra "i" representando la Inclusión. En uno de las versiones comienzo a incluir la forma de un corazón como símbolo del amor familiar.

Uno de los bocetos se distinguía por sus formas más orgánicas. Representando dos padres siendo abrazados por sus dos hijos (la franja blanca representa el abrazo de los pequeños) los cuales están, a su vez, incluidos gráficamente en los adultos como representación de la protección que debe ser brindada a todo niño por sus padres o representantes. También debo agregar que en este boceto incluí de forma sutil elementos geográficos que representan a la provincia de British Columbia: las formas y franjas onduladas representan las montañas, el mar y los ríos de la provincia.

Finalmente, el boceto que prácticamente fue elegido por unanimidad. Un diseño muy orgánico y limpio. Representa un niño feliz, jugando. Puede representar al niño saltando la cuerda o tomando de la mano a uno de sus padres. La cuerda es, al mismo tiempo, un corazón, símbolo del amor y la ternura.

New applications in my webcomic

To all my friends and El Rechiste´s followers. My best wishes for a great 2011. Hopefully, next Monday I will start publishing my cartoons again. I would like to tell you about two new applications I installed in the blog these days.

With the first one, you can write your email address to receive an automatic email every time I publish a new cartoon.

The second application is a widget that you can easily add to your blog and have my cartoons in my blog. Isn't it great? :)

Novedades en mi webcomic

Este próximo lunes 10 de Enero espero comenzar a publicar nuevamente mis acostumbradas viñetas. Por lo pronto quería comentarles un par de novedades que se van a encontrar en el blog, las cuales he agregado para facilitarles el poder estar informados acerca de nuevas publicaciones.

En primer lugar, arriba a la derecha van a encontrar una aplicación por la que, escribiendo su correo electrónico pueden recibir un email informándoles cuando yo publique una nueva viñeta. El sistema es automático.

Además, he agregado también una interesante aplicación para aquellos que tienen blog y les gustaría tener allí las viñetas de El Rechiste. El Widget es de fácil instalación y espero llegue a ser un simpático y apreciado valor agregado en sus respectivos blogs.

It is incredible how it is possible to transmit so many feelings, moods, rythm and much more through photography. And to do that, the photographer can use diverse elements like the expresion of a child´s face, the immensity of a landscape or the range of colors... and talking about colors, it was the theme for the photographic group La Vuelta al Mundo (Around the World) during July. Here you can see my pictures, but you can visit the group´s wall in Flickr to enjoy many beautiful images.

Es increíble todo lo que es posible expresar a través de la fotografía: sentimientos, estados de ánimo, ritmo... y el fotógrafo puede valerse de muchos elementos para lograr el cometido. A veces la expresión de un niño... o la vastedad de un paisaje... o la gama de colores... y hablando de colores, ese fue el tema en el grupo fotográfico de La Vuelta al Mundo durante el mes de Julio. Aquí podrán ver mis fotos participantes, pero además, si quieren ver una galería más hermosa y colorida que de costumbre, dense un paseíto por el mural del grupo.

In this case, the initial goal was the creation of the logo but, subsequently, the client asked for the stationery and a brochure. At the end, this Human Resources Consulting company counted on a complete brand identity and an important marketing tool.

Un muy completo proyecto de diseño

Algunas veces nos toca llevar un proyecto desde el comienzo, y con el tiempo van a surgiendo nuevas metas por cumplir para un mismo cliente. En este caso, la asignación inicial fue la creación del logo, pero en posteriores y sucesivas fases se me asignó la responsabilidad de crearles los elementos de la papelería y un díptico informativo.

This photographic set is my contribution to the theme "Happiness" for the Flickr group "La Vuelta al Mundo " (Around the World). The pictures were taken in the Venezuelan Plains , with a 35 mm camera. I manipulated layers in Photoshop and used a pareeerica texture.

Este set de fotografías es mi aporte al tema "Felicidad" del grupo en Flickr "La Vuelta al Mundo ." Las fotos fueron tomadas en los Llanos Venezolanos con una cámara 35 mm. Utilicé una textura de pareerica y edité manipulando capas en Photoshop.

En esta época en que todo y todos somos multifuncionales, donde la información es cada día más compleja y transmitida por gran cantidad de canales, podemos tener la tendencia a valorar más aquello que nos presenta el mensaje más completo o nos soluciona más problemas a la vez. Sin embargo, la belleza de lo simple, los sonidos del silencio y la profundidad del vacío han inspirado a los humanos desde tiempos inmemorables y están allí, a la espera de que abramos nuestros sentidos ante ellos, para sí alimentar el espíritu creativo que llevamos dentro.

Hablando de simpleza, he aquí varias imágenes minimalistas con las que, de paso, participo en el tema de marzo del grupo en Flickr La Vuelta al Mundo . Silenciosos pescadores en la niebla, bulliciosas aves de la ciudad y una patinadora olímpica volando sobre el hielo fueron esta vez mi colaboradores modelos.

In this modern world, where everything and everyone is multitasking, where the information is more complex everyday, and it's transmitted through a huge number of channels, we could value better those that give us the most complete message or solve more problems at once. Nevertheless, the beauty of the simplest, the sounds of silence and the depth of emptiness have inspired human beings for thousands of years, and they are waiting for us, to feed the creative spirit within everyone of us.

Talking about simplicity, here there are some minimalist images to participate in the March theme for the Flickr group La Vuelta al Mundo (Around the World). Silent fishermen in the fog, noisy city birds and an olympic skater flying over the ice were, this time, my collaborating models.

I love drawing since I was a kid. By that time I used to create mi own comic books in my drawing notebooks. But, with the time I started to create cartoons and gags. It is a creative process that I enjoy a lot: choosing a topic and try to find the funny side.

En esta ocasión quisiera compartir con ustedes un nuevo proyecto personal.

Dibujar ha sido mi gran pasión desde niño. Hay gente cuyo pasatiempo es tocar guitarra, o jugar béisbol, o fotografiar. El mío ha sido la creación de humor gráfico, porque no sólo se requiere dibujar sino que me permite llevar a cabo un proceso creativo super interesante: elegir un tema y rebanarme los sesos buscándole el lado gracioso para después llevarlo al papel.

Durante 2010 me propongo publicar dos chistes semanales en un nuevo blog que inauguré con el año. Ojalá lo puedan visitar y seguir con frecuencia. Sería un placer que me acompañaran en este proyecto y sus comentarios siempre serán bienvenidos.

This illustration was made for a children´s short story. I still remember how many soft layers of color pencil I used to get the gray in the hippo.

Designing logos for conventions

For a while, I was in charge of designing the image for a series of annual conventions. Like in most of the big events, the logo is the cornerstone, and based on it, the rest of applications are designed. These conventions were organized in a different country every year. That is why, in the logos I used iconic images of the country.

For the convention organized in Italy, I found the inspiration in the ruins of the ancient Roman Empire. The Eiffel Tower, the runic alphabet and the pipers allowed me to relate the logos with France, Scandinavia and Scotland.

Diseñando logos para convenciones

Por un tiempo fui el encargado de diseñar la imagen de una serie de convenciones anuales. Como en la mayoría de los grandes eventos, el logo es la piedra angular en la que se basan el resto de las aplicaciones. En este caso, como puede verse, los eventos se realizaban cada año en un país distinto. Por ello, siempre busqué relacionarlo con una imagen icónica del lugar.

Para el logo de Italia me inspiré en las antiguas ruinas de la época imperial. así mismo, la Torre Eiffel, el alfabeto rúnico y los gaiteros me permitieron relacionar los logos con Francia, Escandinavia y Escocia.

Sometimes, your photo is not what you were expecting, but for sure it deserves a new opportunity. With Photoshop, appropriate textures and a good dose of creativity it is possible to express concepts or even to create new fantastic worlds from a "pretty normal" photograph.

Un chiste en tres etapas

La primera de las etapas para realización de un chiste como éste es, por supuesto, la generación del concepto, de la idea graciosa. En este caso quería crear alguna situación chistosa, relacionada con esta fiebre que últimamente tengo por la fotografía.
En segundo lugar el dibujo en sí, primero en lápiz, trazando y borrando, trazando y borrando... hasta que por fin me gusta lo que veo. Luego viene el pase a tinta.
A este dibujo quise darle la vitalidad del color, llevarlo hasta su última etapa de desarrollo, así que a sacarle provecho al scanner y al Photoshop.

Et Voilá!!!! mi fotógrafo de La Vuelta al Mundo está listo para ser compartido con ustedes.

A gag in three stages
The first step to create a gag like this is the generation of the concept, the funny idea. In this case I wanted to figure out a joke about photography, an activity that I have been enjoying more than ever during the last year.
Once I develop the concept I go to the table and draw and erase, draw and erase... until I finally like what I have done. Then, I proceed to ink the drawing.
In this case I wanted to add color, so I scanned the line art and color it in Photoshop.
Et Voilá!!!! my photographer is ready to be shared with you.

Durante el mes de Noviembre, la tarea para los miembros del grupo en Flickr La Vuelta al Mundo, al que pertenezco, era la de tomar fotografías con el tema de Still Life o Naturaleza Muerta. Si van al pool del grupo podrán disfrutar de muchas imágenes que son verdaderas joyas.

In November, the members of the photography group in Flickr La Vuelta al Mundo (Around the world) had to take photographs with the theme Still life. If you go to the group´s pool you will enjoy several jewels.

Como mi cámara es super básica decidí que esta vez Photoshop sería un gran aliado para lograr mi cometido.

My camera is very basic, so I decided Photoshop would be a great ally to improve my photographs.

Cuando estaba buscando el nombre para esta nueva bitácora personal, la palabrita me vino a la mente y la verdad es que me pareció simpática. Además, de alguna manera engloba buena parte de los temas que, Dios mediante, estaré tocando en el blog: dibujo e ilustración, diseño gráfico, fotografía, entre otros.
Bienvenidos pues, a esta nueva vitrina donde estaré publicando reflexiones y esas imagenes, viejas y nuevas, que brotan de mi imaginación para quedar plasmadas en trazos y bytes.

When I was trying to figure out the name for this new personal blog, this funny word came to my mind. It comes from the Spanish words Dibujar (to draw), Grafismo (graphic design) and Fotografía (photography) among others. It contains most of the topics I will touch in the entries.
